After a decade of planning and preparations, and two very successful test voyages, the DARWIN200 team is proud to launch the 2023-25 Global Voyage, following the journey of Charles Darwin on HMS Beagle!
The DARWIN200 Global Voyage will make landfall at key locations where Charles Darwin stepped ashore during the voyage of HMS Beagle.
This expedition is open to three types of passengers, DARWIN200 Leaders, DARWIN200 Mentors or DARWIN200 Sailors – which are you? (Explained on next page)
DARWIN200 is searching for enthusiastic, adventurous people to join the spectacular tall ship Oosterschelde along 32 legs that make up the 2023-2025 Global Voyage to make the DARWIN200 Project possible. . The expedition is starting and finishing in the UK, just like Darwin did 200 years ago.
The Core Team behind the DARWIN200 Project:
Stewart McPherson – Project leader
Stewart is an award-winning author of over 35 natural history books and presenter of numerous wildlife TV documentaries. He leads dozens of expeditions across the world each year and has discovered 35 new species. Stewart has witnessed both the destruction of nature and the saving of species on the absolute brink of extinction.
Mike Piercy – Commercial director
Mike has first-hand experience of organising a major global voyage dealing with the logistics at each port, as well managing the day-to-day financial requirements such an undertaking entails and liaising with the PR and advertising agencies.
Patrons and Supporters of the DARWIN200 Project:
Dr Jane Goodall, DBE Founder – the Jane Goodall Institute & UN Messenger of Peace
Dr. Sylvia Earle – Marine Biologist, Conservationist
Dr Sarah Darwin – Charles Darwin’s Great-Great-Granddaughter
DARWIN200 Leaders
Are you passionate about conserving the natural world? Have you accomplished something that demonstrates your drive as a conservationist? Are you aged between 18-25 years old?
DARWIN200 is searching for the top young conservationists from 200 countries and states around the world. Once selected, these young conservationists will be invited to join the DARWIN200 tall ship for intensive training to become the environmental leaders of the world of tomorrow.
One young person from each country will be invited to fly to one of the ports that Darwin visited, to join DARWIN200’s floating laboratory, to have a life-changing experience to inspire, empower to change their lives and give them the skills they need to help change the world of tomorrow. Do you want that to be you? It can be!
DARWIN200 Mentors
Experienced and passionate about environmental sciences, natural history or conservation? Keen to share your knowledge?
Mentor a DARWIN LEADER during their placements aboard the DARWIN200 tall ship and help nurture the next generation’s conservation leaders!
As a DARWIN MENTOR, you will join the DARWIN200 tall ship in a port that Charles Darwin visited. Your task will be to help shape your DARWIN LEADER’s research project and learning experience.
DARWIN200 Sailors
You don’t have to have any sailing experience or qualifications (all sail training is provided). You will be expected to be a solid member of the crew and help out as and when you are needed, whatever time of day or night.
The cost to become a DARWIN200 Sailor is variable due to the different leg lengths.
Join our voyage around the world!
Various ports around the World
For logistical reasons, the route that HMS Beagle took has been simplified.
For example, HMS Beagle back-tracked north and south several times along the east coast of South America. We will sail this route only once.
We have also added a few locations that Charles Darwin did not visit. These enhance the global voyage and enable sailing during periods of optimal weather. These additional stops also allow essential repair and maintenance, refueling, reprovisioning and planned publicity events.
Crucially, unlike HMS Beagle (which sailed crossed the Indian Ocean), we are returning from Australia via Cape Horne to enable visits to South Georgia and Tristan da Cunha!
With the exception of Cocos (Keeling) and Mauritius, we will make landfall at every major location Charles Darwin visited during his voyage aboard HMS Beagle!

The Global Voyage will be undertaken aboard the historic 50-metre-long tall ship Oosterschelde.
Built in 1918, this uniquely restored, three-masted schooner is one of the most beautiful historic vessels afloat.
She can carry 24 voyage crew (members of the public joining as DARWIN SAILORS) plus a professional crew. She has a bar, a piano, and a wood-fired stove.
You will be accommodated in comfortable, single-sex cabins that consist of 2 or 4 bunks.
Oosterschelde has already successfully completed two past global voyages (in 1996-98 and 2012-14). During these voyages, the ship journeyed to Antarctica, the Falklands and South Georgia.
There are 32 Sectors/legs, starting in Plymouth, England sailing to Sydney and Hobart and returning to Falmouth, England July 2025. Each sector varies in length from 2 days to 48 days and the price to join the crew changes accordingly. For example Sydney to Hobart is a 7 day voyage and costs approximately AU$3,300/person.
Before and after your voyage leg
We strongly recommend you book a few days accommodation in the port of your embarkation (prior to your joining Oosterschelde), and a few days in the port you disembark (after your place on the voyage ends). This will allow you to recover before and after your adventure and will give you the opportunity to explore locations at your start and end points.
More than an Adventure!
By taking part in the Global Voyage, you support the DARWIN200 project. As part of your adventure, you will receive the following exclusive benefits:
