Over 50 and Travelling Solo

Who is a solo traveller?

A solo traveller is someone who does not have a travelling partner. Being solo doesn’t necessarily mean you are single, divorced, widowed etc although you may be. It just means if you want to go travelling, you just don’t have that significant other who wants, or is able, to travel too.

Being a solo traveller doesn’t mean you have to don a heavy backpack and wander the streets alone, or book a 5-star resort and sit around the pool by yourself. The most popular option for solo travellers is to join a small-group tour, which is perfect regardless of your gender and flying solo.

Solo travellers are the fastest-growing travelling demographic, and it’s not just young people. On our ICON Adventure tours, on average 40% of our clients are solo travellers. We have both males and females travelling solo and most are over the age of 50.

Are you a solo traveller?

We understand it can be a little daunting travelling solo in a tour group. That’s why we do our best to alleviate your fears before you join us.

  • Firstly, you can be put in direct contact with the tour host. You will be offered the opportunity to meet them in person or via email/phone. That gives you the chance to be familiar with at least one person in the group
  • We can offer you a twin share room with another solo traveller at no extra cost
  • Most of our tours have a single-room option if that is preferable to you. A single supplement is offered at a reasonable price
  • Your safety is important to us. Every group develops a great sense of camaraderie and soon everyone is looking out for each other. As our tours attract such lovely people, this camaraderie often starts on day one and is overseen by the tour host
  • Free time is yours to go off and do things alone if you wish. However, if you don’t want to, there is always someone else looking for a new friend to explore with
  • Sometimes we offer tours without a single supplement charge, everyone gets their own room, if they want to. See our Unlock India Tour March 2023
